TECHNOLOGY BREAKTHROUGH - 3D printing technology builds precision high-noble gold crown copings from a CAD-produced virtual waxing. - Dental Lab Products Magazine - 2/07 Issue
When Don Albensi, CDT, opened his dental laboratory in 1979, Jimmy Carter presided over a U.S. economy mired in double-digit inflation, Americans lined up at the gas pumps to secure rationed supplies of gasoline, and stagflation was at an all-time high with foreign competition in Japan and Europe challenging the global dominance of American manufacturers.
And in Pittsburgh, where Albensi opened his doors for business more than a quarter-century ago, the city continued its decade-old struggle to recover from the collapse of the U.S. steel industry, which had left thousands of its citizens unemployed and the city looking for a new identity.
In this price-driven business environment, Albensi Dental Laboratory survived, and now with 40 employees, thrives because Albensi sought out creative solutions to keep his profit margins in check without sacrificing the quality of the products produced. Looking back, Albensi admits staying in the Pittsburgh market may not have been the most sound business decision at the out-set, but it forced him to consider unconventional business options to streamline production and stretch his reach outside the immediate metro area.
Albensi believes that the primary key to his business success has been the adoption of technology to automate production. From using ready-made wax forms to press full-contour crowns and CAD/CAM milling technology to fabricate metal-free zirconta-based restorations, to the newest 3D printing technology to automate production of high-noble PFMs, Albensi continually looks to new technology concepts that reduce production time and labor.
DLP (Dental Lab Products) sat down with Albensi in his Irwin, Pa. laboratory to talk about the impact these new technologies have had on his business and, in particular, the impact of the newest 3D printing technology introduced by Imagen Corp. this past fall.

A little more than twenty-five years ago, Albensi Laboratories opened for business with the
pledge to be committed to the success of every client's practice. This required our vow to

deliveries and the latest technology available.
These vows continue to be upheld today with the ultimate goal in mind...bringing smiles to
